Cubs sign veteran catcher John Hicks to minor league deal |
Some roster news today despite the ongoing lockout.
The Chicago Cubs have signed veteran catcher John Hicks to a minor league contract. In 2021 with the Rangers Triple-A team, Hicks hit an impressive .290 with 13 homers in 64 games. When called up to the big leagues last season, he hit .258 with four homers and seven RBIs in 31 at-bats. With the Tigers in 2019, he hit .240 with 13 homers and 35 RBIs in 95 games. He has had stints in the majors, mainly with the Tigers, and stops with the Rangers and Mariners. The 32-year-old will be a depth piece for the organization stashed away in Triple-A in case of injuries to starter Willson Contreras and backup Yan Gomes. Not a bad move to add Hicks on a minor league deal because he's a decent third option if needed.
