Cubs News: Javier Baez exits game after injuring himself batting

SAN FRANCISCO — Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez appeared to injure his right hand in his seventh-inning at-bat on Sunday. Baez hit a grounder and immediately dropped his bat, shaking his right hand while also shaking his head as he lingered in the batter's box.

The groundout to first base, which marked the third out of the half-inning and occurred with the Cubs leading the San Francisco Giants 4-3 at Oracle Park, ended Baez's day, as Sergio Alcantara took over for "El Mago" at shortstop in the bottom of the seventh. With a slew of infielders currently on the shelf due to injury, the Cubs can ill afford to go without Baez for a lengthy period of time.

UPDATE: The Cubs later announced that Baez departed Sunday's tilt due to right thumb soreness.
