KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chicago Cubs today selected catcher Christian Bethancourt from Triple-A Iowa and placed catcher Tomás Nido on the 10-day injured list with a right knee sprain (retroactive to July 25). To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Ben Brown has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Bethancourt, 32, signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on July 4 and, in seven games with the Iowa Cubs, is hitting .192 (5-for-26). He spent the majority of the season with the Miami Marlins and batted .159 (13-for-82) with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI across 38 games. His 26.1% caught-stealing rate (6 CS, 23 SBA) ranks eighth in the National League among catchers with at least 23 stolen base attempts against and his 1.91 pop time is in the 82nd percentile in the majors.

Bethancourt has a career .226 batting average (268-for-1,184) and 31.1% caught-stealing rate in 403 games with the Atlanta Braves (2013-15), San Diego Padres (2016-17), Oakland Athletics (2022), Tampa Bay Rays (2022-23) and Miami Marlins (2024). He made his major league debut on September 29, 2013, with Atlanta.

Nido, 30, has caught four of 12 stolen base attempts (33.3%) and guided pitchers to a 3.08 ERA (44 ER/128.2 IP) since signing a major league contract with the Cubs on June 19.

Brown, 24, was originally placed on the 15-day injured list on June 9 with a neck strain.

The Cubs play the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium today at 7:10 p.m. CT in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 the Score.
