REGISTER HEREPHOENIX – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman off the 15-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia to Triple-A Iowa.

Stroman, 32, was placed on the 15-day injured list August 2 (retroactive to August 1) with right hip inflammation. He is 10-8 with a 3.85 ERA (55 ER/128.2 IP) in 23 starts for the Cubs, walking 50 and striking out 111 batters in his second season with Chicago. Stroman opened the campaign with a 9-4 record and a 2.28 ERA (25 ER/98.2 IP) in his first 16 outings through June 20 and was named to the N.L. All-Star Team, his second career All-Star nod (also 2019).

Stroman is 77-75 with four complete games, two shutouts and one save with a 3.64 ERA (524 ER/1,295.2 IP) in 227 career games, all but six as a starter, with Toronto (2014-19), the Mets (2019, 2021) and the Cubs (2022-23). He has walked 374 batters, struck out 1,083 and recorded a 1.25 WHIP. Stroman earned a Rawlings Gold Glove with the Blue Jays in 2017, finishing eighth in the A.L. Cy Young voting that season.

Selected by Toronto in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Duke University, Stroman made his major league debut in 2014, appearing in 26 games (20 starts) for the Blue Jays while going 11-6 with a complete game shutout and a save to go along with a 3.65 ERA (53 ER/130.2 IP).

Palencia, 23, is 5-2 with a 4.09 ERA (10 ER/22.0 IP) in 21 relief appearances for Chicago in his first major league campaign. He was acquired July 26, 2021, with outfielder Greg Deichmann from Oakland for left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin.
