Down on Cubs Farm: Marquez shines in Pels debut, Zinn impressive, SB falls late, more

Tuesday was a very quiet night on the diamond as just two A-league teams were in action. Although the results were mixed with the Cubs going 1-1. We continued to see a dominating stretch from Brailyn Marquez as he continues to make noise in the Minors.

IOWA CUBS: Off Travel Day

TENNESSEE SMOKIES: Off Travel Day

MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS 10 – Winston Salem Dash 1: After a two consecutive shout out starts and a string of great outings at South Bend No. 4 prospect Brailyn Marquez was promoted to Myrtle Beach and made his debut Tuesday. Not only did Marquez impress in his first start with his new team but picked up right where he left off as he tossed five no-hit innings with 3BB and 4K to earn the win as the Pelicans improved to 44-68 on the year.

The Pelicans needed very little time getting the offense going as they took the lead for good in the second inning on singles from both Aramis Ademan and Grant Fennell for the 2-0 lead. The very next inning saw Ademan add his second RBI single in as many frames to go with an Eric Gonzalez RBI knock and Kevonte Mitchell sac fly and just like that it was 5-0 through three.

The sixth inning is when the Pels decided to bust things wide open as a bases-loaded walk to Miguel Amaya stretched the lead to 6-0. A few pitches later saw Delvin Zinn clear the bases with a double to make things 9-0 before Zinn came home on a throwing error on the same play to make it 10-0 Myrtle Beach. The Dash plated their only run in the eighth on the Andrew Vaughn single as the Pelicans rolled 10-1.

Three hit nights from both Zinn and Fennell set the tone with both combining for four RBI’s. Both Carlos Sepulveda and Ademan got in on the fun with multi-hit efforts of their own. Amaya may have gone hitless but managed to draw two walks with an RBI in the win. Ethan Roberts lowered his ERA to 2.93 following a pair of scoreless frames.

SOUTH BEND CUBS 2 – Great Lakes Loons 6: After both teams were at a stalemate through seven innings of play, the Loons managed to get the upper hand late with a four-run eighth inning to send the Cubs to 61-51 with the 6-2 loss. Cam Sanders got the ball and took yet another no-decision in this start allowing just 2ER in five innings of work.

It was the Loons managing to grab the upper hand early as Dan Robinson smoked an RBI triple in the second to put Great Lakes up 1-0. One inning later saw Leonel Valera double the lead to 2-0 as took Sanders deep to right-center for his fourth homer of the season.

Although it took a little while for the Cubs offense to get rolling, their pitching kept things close as South Bend cut the deficit in half in the fourth with a Nelson Maldonado sacrifice fly to make things 2-1. With that score still intact heading into the bottom of the seventh, Cole Roederer continued to pile up the RBI’s in the second half as his single brought things even 2-2.

It was in the eighth inning when things began to come unglued as Sean Barry uncorked a wild pitch to give the Loons the lead yet again 3-2. Great Lakes continued to add on in the eighth inning as the Chris Roller single busted the game open at 5-2 before Justin Yurchak picked up a sacrifice fly to cap off the four-run frame making it 6-2 Loons.

The Cubs picked up a leadoff single from Darius Hill in the eighth as they were hoping to get something going. Unfortunately for them, Hill was the final base runner of the game for the Cubs as they were dealt a 6-2 loss and series split with the Loons.

With just six hits in the game, the South Bend offense was quiet as Nelson Velazquez led the way with the only two-hit performance. Jake Slaughter continued to swing a hot bat collecting yet another hit while Roederer, Hill, and Fidel Mejia rounded out the hit category.

EUGENE EMERALDS: All-star break

The Rookie league teams managed to go 2-2 on the day with DSL CUBS 1 knocking off the Red Sox 6-4 and AZL CUBS 2 beating the AZL Athletics Green 5-1. DSL 1 fell to the Tigers 4-2 with the AZL 1 losing 3-2 at the hands of the Brewers.
