Cubs send Carl Edwards to Iowa, Mike Montgomery to IL, and recall two pitchers

MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs have placed left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 5) with a mild left lat strain and optioned right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards, Jr. to Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding roster moves, left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa and right-handed pitcher Allen Webster has been selected from Triple-A Iowa.

To make room for Webster on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng has been designated for assignment.

Both Ryan and Webster will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their three-game series at the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ryan, 27, signed a one-year major league deal with the Cubs last November after going 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA (21 ER/66.0 IP) in 22 appearances (eight starts, 14 in relief) for Triple-A Iowa in 2018. The southpaw has spent parts of four seasons in the majors with the Detroit Tigers (2014-17), going 8-6 with a 3.87 ERA (55 ER/128.0 IP) in 86 career big league appearances, all but seven in relief.

The 6-foot-5 Ryan recorded the win in Iowa’s season opener on Thursday in Nashville (1 ER/1.2 IP). He was originally selected by the Tigers in the 12th round of the 2010 Draft out of Auburndale (FL) High School. He has gone 46-51 with a 3.64 ERA (354 ER/874.1 IP) in 210 minor league appearances (139 starts, 71 in relief) covering 10 career seasons.

Webster, 29, returns to the big leagues after finishing the 2018 campaign with the Cubs (1-0, 6.00 ERA, three relief appearances, .167 batting average against). Last year, Webster posted a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) with three saves and 11 strikeouts compared to one walk in eight games between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa, holding opponents to a .200 average (6-for-30), a .226 on-base percentage and a .526 OPS.

The righthander is 8-6 with a 6.13 ERA (84 ER/123.1 IP) in 31 games (23 starts) spanning parts of four major league seasons with the Red Sox (2013-14), Diamondbacks (2015) and Cubs (2018). Webster was originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 18th round of the 2008 Draft. He made one scoreless appearance with Iowa on Thursday and is 54-43 with a 4.02 ERA (391 ER/874.1 IP) in 197 career minor league contests (153 starts).

Edwards, Jr., 27, has allowed six earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched (32.40 ERA) in four relief outings this year. He is 8-8 with two saves and 3.36 ERA (60 ER/160.2 IP) in 176 relief outings covering four major league seasons with the Cubs (2016-19).

Montgomery, 29, has allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched (16.88 ERA) in four relief outings this year. He is 20-25 with three saves and a 3.68 ERA (183 ER/447.1 IP) in 151 appearances (56 starts) covering five big league campaigns.

Tseng, 24, has gone 34-35 with a 3.85 ERA (265 ER/619.0 IP) in 113 minor league appearances (111 starts) in five minor league seasons in the Cubs organization. He is 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA (8 ER/8.0 IP) in three major league outings, two as a starter.
