Cubs win National League Central for third time in five seasons |
Four days after earning a playoff bid, the Chicago Cubs clinched the National League Central for their third division title in five seasons and first since 2017. The Cubs entered Saturday with their magic number to win the National League Central standing at one, and a loss suffered by the St. Louis Cardinals secured the division crown for the North Siders.
In the midst of the Cubs battling the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on the South Side, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cardinals on the road. The Brewers' 3-0 shutout win at Busch Stadium eliminated the Redbirds from the division chase and locked the Cubs in as the No. 3 seed for the National League portion of the playoffs.
