Twitter reacts to Cubs hiring of David Ross |
The day has come finally as the Chicago Cubs have finalized their decision to appoint David Ross as their new manager for 2020 and beyond.
The Twitter world was abuzz with excitement about the decision for 'Grandpa Rossy' to assume the managerial position with the North Siders. Check out some of the interesting tweets below: Throwing it back to the “Rudy” ending I made with David Ross per @MBDChicago’s idea. From being carried off the field after the Cubs won the World Series to being named manager.
In his final game, David Ross went yard in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series with the Cubs.
Congrats to David Ross. Must have repeated Theo’s Starbucks order perfectly.
Theo Epstein loves David Ross. The #Cubs love David Ross. Really, baseball loves David Ross. https://t.co/9Y0K8PL9Pa
ross to be manager. to be clear, there is no 1 I want running this thing other than theo. no one a I trust more. Ive been PLENTY critical but if he says its david ross its david goddamn ross. Im not wavering on the best employee in cubs history. give me the shark Im not leaving
It's funny ... In a way, we all think of David Ross as old because of his nickname (grandpa), but he (42) is 23-years younger than Joe Maddon (65).
Just put players in the best spot to succeed. That’s all I want. Now, improve the roster. Thanks. Go Cubs.

The negativity overload in response to the David Ross news is a reflection on the decay of the dynasty dreams, as the game has caught up to Theo’s wisdom. I get it. The question is whether you trust him to adjust, lead, and make the Cubs better. I do.
Sources confirm: David Ross is new #Cubs manager. First reported: @thekapman and @ESPNChiCubs.
The #Cubs appear to have their new manager, and SURPRISE! It's David Ross! What do you think Cubs fans? https://t.co/tJn6KQF40G https://t.co/HtoIcXQCBm pic.twitter.com/Y5u1lJNAtq
David Ross will be a popular choice for both the Cubs' players and the fan base. It will be interesting to see how he handles managing many of his former teammates.
Managed Team After Hitting a Home Run for Them in Game 7 of the World Series
David Ross was the people’s choice, as well as the #Cubs’ front office, since late 2018 when the Cubs declined to give Joe Maddon an extension.
David Ross will be the 4th #Cubs manager who also played for a Cubs #WorldSeries champion.
According to @ESPNChiCubs on the radio right now, David Ross & Joe Espada did a fake presser & a mock team meeting this week. David Ross blew the Cubs front office away on Monday and the decision came shortly after.
Since David Ross is in the news lately, here are some career notes: pic.twitter.com/acqPiEpvB0
I don’t think managers matter all that much so I’m sure David Ross will be fine. What concerns me is thus far all the changes the Cubs have made are reshuffling internal candidates to new positions. Where are the outside ideas and scanning the game for the best and brightest?
Cubs: We need to stop living in 2016
David Ross’ resume:
From the beginning, the Cubs have operated under the idea that someone was going to have to beat David Ross out for their manager’s job. No one did. @ESPNChiCubs said last night it was happening, and @thekapman confirmed it today: Grandpa Rossy is now Skipper Rossy.

I'm just glad that David Ross will finally get some publicity in Chicago. He's always been so under-covered.

After ESPN’s David Ross gets Cubs job this AM, another ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez will have 2nd interview with #Mets today.
I thought Girardi was most qualified candidate but incompatible. Hiring David Ross—after wanting to distance Cubs from ‘16—is a contradiction. That said, Theo has his reasons that always make more sense after he explains them. Ross likely will be fine but has tough act to follow.
David Ross will now manage the Cubs.
Per source - one of the things that put Ross over the top for the job with the Cubs, was his strong delivery of a mock 2020 Spring Training team speech. The club asked Ross and Joe Espada to compose and deliver mock speeches for the staff during their second interviews. David Ross was teammates with Álex Cora & Dave Roberts on the 2002-04 Dodgers
As I said on the radio several times, Espada was brought in Sunday and did a mock press conference as well as a fake "talk" with the team. Ross did the same on Monday. Obviously a strength for Ross. Not sure if it clinched the job for him but it didn't hurt.
David Ross caught Craig Kimbrel's MLB debut (with Braves) on May 7, 2010.

Cubs, 2017-19: We need a leader like David Ross in the clubhouse. Someone who isn't afraid to hold guys accountable. That's a big thing we're missing.
Chicago Cubs to hire former catcher David Ross as manager.
This is why. This is why David Ross is the fucking man. These guys love him and it’s so important for the players to buy in and play inspired ball for the grind of 162 and I think this is the guy for the job. Love it baby, lets go. https://t.co/gDWSVWdDqi
1) Seeing/hearing a lot of people throwing Theo's words back at him re moving on from 2016 but hiring a player from that team. It's easy criticism but I think its taking things too literal. I think they just want the players to have that edge again, like they haven't won anything
2) Pretty good way to help get that edge back is someone like Ross (I would imagine). The fact that he played here 4 years ago shouldn't get in the way. It's not like HE has a ring as a manager!
Remember how much you once loved @D_Ross3 the first time he makes a pitching change which backfires @Cubs fans. #GoCubsGo pic.twitter.com/ATGEEJDa1i
Truly inspiring. Anything is possible! @Cubs pic.twitter.com/k1DIdWXvcj
Today feels like a good day to re-share this video. To the rest of the MLB, your manager could NEVER. pic.twitter.com/agF7Ly1950
"This is a sensational hire by Theo Epstein. I think David Ross is incredibly bright and brutally honest. They kinda need that attitude adjustment after Joe Madden...I absolutely, positively love this move for the Cubs. Right guy, right time."
Congratulations skip, @D_Ross3. pic.twitter.com/KQDX659jCM

Yogi Berra - Yankees
Ken Boyer - Cardinals
David Ross - Cubs
The other three?
Joe Tinker (managed 1916)
Johnny Evers (managed 1913 & 1921)
Frank Chance (managed 1905-12)
Also Cubs: Come run the team, David Ross
• 15 years as a player in MLB
• 8 different teams
• 2x World Series Champ
• 3 years in the Cubs front office
I get Ross has not had any official managerial experience but serving as a player/manager late in his career & as a member of the FO .. I like it.
Mets view media side to manager’s job as extremely important, especially in wake of Callaway’s clunkiness. So don’t sleep on Perez as strong candidate
If you or any of the players didn’t get a huge jolt of energy, they need to get excited. This is the right move.
I don’t want to hear, “not a good move, they’re all best friends.” Would you want a manager that all the players hate?
Meanwhile, that same day in Cincinnati, Starlin Castro had a homer, triple & 6 RBI in his MLB debut for the #Cubs
Cubs fans, late 2019: Idiots hired David Ross, the big teddy bear who can't hold guys accountable
By the end of 2016 season, Ross was the 6th oldest active player in the National League. As of now, Ross will be the 3rd youngest active manager in MLB, behind Rocco Baldelli (38) and Kevin Cash (41). h/t @EliasSports pic.twitter.com/TyJm76BJkV
