WATCH: Albert Almora Jr. shares his thoughts on White Sox extending protective netting |
CHICAGO — On Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox announced that, at some point this summer, the netting at Guaranteed Rate Field will be extended from foul pole to foul pole, with the announcement coming in the wake of the scary incident at Minute Maid Park in Houston involving Chicago Cubs center fielder Albert Almora Jr. In late May, with the Cubs taking on the Houston Astros, Almora hit a foul ball that hit a little girl seated down the third baseline, leaving Almora devastated.
While the young girl turned out to be just fine following a trip to the emergency room, Almora was shaken by the ordeal and called for major-league ballparks to have their protective netting extended down the foul lines. Therefore, Almora was pleased to hear that the White Sox would be implementing that change at their park, and he was asked about it prior to the Cubs' matchup with the White Sox at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. Saying that he doesn't want to see any fans going home with "bumps or bruises," Almora had his sentiments echoed by White Sox left fielder Eloy Jimenez, who also supported the expansion of the protective netting. Check this out! It was a SCARY & JARRING moment @MinuteMaidParks last night during #Cubs-#Astros game, when a 4 YO girl was hit by a foul ball! It happened when Cub's player, Albert Almora Jr. hit a foul line drive into the stands. Fortunately, she's OK. #khou11 #htownrush pic.twitter.com/xvrxwmV5c5 #Cubs Albert Almora, Jr. and #WhiteSox Eloy Jimenez know the foul ball dangers first hand and applaud the Sox for being first MLB team to extend netting to both foul poles later this season. @cbschicago pic.twitter.com/jboSg1Kf3i
