by -

The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson to the Arizona Complex League.

Alzolay, 28, was placed on the injured list Sept. 11 (retroactive to Sept. 10) with a right forearm strain. Prior to landing on the injured list, the righthander led the club with 22 saves, going 2-5 with a 2.71 ERA (19 ER/63.0 IP) in 57 relief appearances this season. His 22 saves are the 10th-most in the N.L., while his 12 walks and 1.71 walks per 9.0 IP are the second-lowest among N.L. pitchers (min. 50 G). From July 5-August 29, Alzolay converted 18-straight save opportunities, the most in the major leagues during that span.

Alzolay, in 102 career major league games (27 starts), is 11-21 with a 4.01 ERA (105 ER/235.2 IP) since making his debut in 2019. Since converting to a reliever in 2022, the right-handed pitcher has posted a 2.83 ERA (24 ER/76.1 IP) in 63 appearances,

A native of San Félix, Venezuela, Alzolay is in his 11th season with the Cubs organization after he signed with the club as a non-drafted free agent in December 2012.

Thompson, 28, is 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA (15 ER/28.2 IP) and one save in 19 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
