Cubs trade for Pirates minor league outfielder Gilberto Celestino

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have traded for Pirates minor league outfielder Gilberto Celestino for cash considerations.

The 25-year-old has hit .271 with three homers, 11 doubles, 27 walks, 13 stolen bases, and 25 RBIs with a .705 OPS in 67 games in Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

He spent the 2023 season in the Twins minor league system, hitting .243 in 55 games.

The Astros originally signed him in July 2015 for $2.25 million out of the Dominican Republic.

This is a depth move for the Cubs, as Alexander Canario was injured yesterday.

They will see if Celestino has any future upside and might be needed to fill in if the big-league club has a rash of injuries to the outfield.
