Notes on Arrieta's April

Jake Arrieta finished April 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA … Elias points out that only six other pitchers won five games in April with an ERA of 1.00 or lower: Walter Johnson in 1913, Fernando Valenzuela in 1981, Randy Johnson in 2000, Cliff Lee in 2008, Zack Greinke in 2009 and Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010 … Jake’s 1.00 ERA is the fourth-lowest for a Cub in the season’s opening month (min. 25.0 IP).

* Jake Arrieta on Thursday became the first Cubs pitcher to win each of his first five starts in a season since Greg Maddux started 5-0 in 2006 … the Cubs have now won Jake’s last 18 starts, a franchise record that surpassed 17-straight by Ed Reulbach (1906-07) and Pat Luby (1890-91)

* Jake is 21-1 with a 0.89 ERA (18 ER/183.0 IP) with just 37 walks and 179 strikeouts in his last 25 starts since June 21 of last year, which is the best 25-start stretch in franchise history … he is now 16-0 with a 0.58 ERA (8 ER/124.1 IP) in 17 starts since August 1 of last season.

* Jake allowed a run in Thursday’s fifth inning, snapping a streak of 52.2-straight scoreless innings at home, the second-longest streak in the modern era by a major league pitcher in his home park … the White Sox Ray Herbert holds the record with 54.0 scoreless innings at Comiskey Park in 1962-63.
