WATCH: Counsell ejected after questionable ejection of Nate Pearson

by - Senior Editor -

The Nate Pearson debut did not go well for the Northsiders.

The new reliever for the Cubs gave up a homer to Jeimer Candalario and then threw a fastball that hit Tyler Stephenson in the helmet with a 96 MPH fastball.

If Stephenson honestly thought Pearson was throwing at him, he likely would have angrily charged the mound immediately.

The umpires got together in a huddle and decided to eject Pearson.

“It all happened so quick,” Pearson said after the game. “Not my intention at all. Definitely not trying to do that my first outing as a Cub.”

Cubs manager Craig Counsell came out and was livid after the ejection, as the standard protocol is usually to give a warning first.

Counsell eventually got ejected after giving the home plate umpire a few minutes, yelling at him for what he thought was a ridiculous call.

The Cubs ended up losing 7-1 to the Reds.

“There’s just no intent there," Counsell said to the media after the loss.
