Roster Moves: Cubs re-instate Cody Bellinger, DFA catcher |
MIAMI – The Chicago Cubs today reinstated outfielder Cody Bellinger from the paternity leave list and designated catcher Luis Torrens for assignment.
Bellinger, 27, was placed on the paternity leave list April 25. The left-handed hitting outfielder is batting .300 (24-for-80) with five doubles, five home runs, 15 RBI, nine walks and a .930 OPS in 21 games for Chicago, his first season with the organization. Bellinger signed a one-year contract with the Cubs in December 2022. The six-foot four-inch Bellinger owns a .250 batting average (676-for-2,707) with 139 doubles, 19 triples, 157 home runs, 437 RBI and an .822 OPS in 766 major league games in all or part of seven major league seasons, with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017-22) and Cubs (2023). The 2017 N.L. Rookie of the Year, the 2019 N.L. Most Valuable Player, a two-time N.L. All-Star (2017, 2019), a 2019 Gold Glove Award winner and a 2019 Silver Slugger Award winner, Bellinger’s 157 home runs since the start of the 2017 campaign are sixth-most among left-handed hitters. Selected in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft by the Dodgers out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., Bellinger is the son of former major leaguer, Clay Bellinger. Torrens, 26, hit .250 (4-for-20) with one double and three RBI in 13 games with Chicago in 2023. He signed with the Cubs as a non-roster invitee January 20 and was selected to the major league roster March 28.
