Roster Move: Cubs place Brad Boxberger on IL, recall reliever

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to September 22) with a right forearm strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson to Triple-A Iowa.

Thompson, 28, is in his third stint with Chicago this season (Opening Day-May 19 and August 24-September 8) and has pitched to a 2-2 record with a 4.71 ERA (15 ER/28.2 IP), 19 walks and 26 strikeouts in 19 relief appearances. In 20 outings with the I-Cubs, he is 2-0 with an 8.10 ERA (27 ER/30.0 IP), including a 3.93 ERA (8 ER/18.1 IP) in 11 outings since July 29.

In all or part of three seasons since making his big-league debut with the Cubs in 2021, Thompson is 15-10 with three saves and a 3.79 ERA (83 ER/197.0 IP) in 80 games (23 starts). He has walked 93, struck out 189 and pitched to a 1.34 WHIP. Thompson was selected by Chicago in the third round of 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn University.

Boxberger, 35, is 0-1 with two saves and a 4.95 ERA (11 ER/20.0 IP) in 22 relief appearances for Chicago after he signed a one-year major league contract with a mutual option for 2024 this past offseason.
